Nuvola Lavazza

Nuvola Lavazza is the Group’s Corporate Management Centre in the Aurora district of Turin, the historical site of the company’s industrial development. Designed by architect Cino Zucchi, it sprawls over an area of approximately 30,000 square metres and represents the linchpin of the area's urban renewal. It's a modern workplace that reflects the Group’s global stature and that thanks to advanced technologies is constant dialoguing with its location and the other offices around the world.

 

Nuvola was designed with a sustainable perspective, prioritising people’s well-being, energy-saving and environmental protection. As a result, the centre earned the Platinum level of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, and is recognised as one of the greenest buildings in Europe. In addition to the offices, the complex also includes the Lavazza Museum, a garden piazza, an archaeological site and the vast Centrale, which offers an Events Venue, a Convention Centre, a Bistrot and the Michelin-starred restaurant Condividere. This multifunctional complex has transformed this post-industrial area — formerly a power plant owned by the Enel electricity company — into a space that is open to the outside world, where ideas and energies come together to give people one-of-a-kind experiences.

The strength of our production system

The quality of the Group’s products is the result not only of expertise and of a careful selection of raw materials, but also of an equally excellent production system, which guarantees food safety and systems efficiency.

 

All of the group’s manufacturing plants feature a Quality Management and Food Safety System that meets the requirements of the FSSC 22000 and ISO 9001 Standards, as well as benefiting from high levels of automation, sophisticated quality checks, and flexible management systems, which allow for a prompt response to the various demands of the market.

 

While the Italian manufacturing plants concentrate on the Lavazza-branded products distributed around the world, those in France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and India mainly produce products for the other brands within the Group.

 

A crucial element at the heart of the industrial system, receiving investments of both time and resources, is the professional development of people; because people represent an indispensable strategic success factor for the best possible management of modern, reliable and efficient plants.

The Turin site was Lavazza’s first major industrial manufacturing plant, and to this very day it remains one of the world’s largest centres for coffee production and roasting. It produces ground coffee, beans, ESE coffee pods and coffee capsules.

The plant in Gattinara (VC), which is comparable in size to the one in Turin, produces ground coffee, coffee beans, coffee capsules for all Lavazza systems and instant products.

 

The manufacturing plant in Pozzilli (IS) is dedicated to coffee decaffeination and the re-purposing of the caffeine. The extraction method used is highly selective and leaves the coffee’s organoleptic profile unchanged; moreover, it is a natural method, where the only substances that come into contact with the coffee are carbon dioxide and water.


The Group has other manufacturing plants in Lavérune, France, which mainly produces coffee under the Carte Noire brand, and in Invermere, Canada, for Kicking Horse. The two manufacturing plants in Basingstoke, in the UK, and the one in West Chester in the United States are dedicated to production for the Lavazza Professional business area, while the one in Sri City in India focuses on products intended for the local market.

 

In addition to certifications related to food safety, the Group’s manufacturing plants are authorised to handle Halal-and Kosher-certified productions, as well as guaranteeing the production of sustainable coffee (UTZ, RFA, Organic).

The Innovation Centre

Innovation and research are essential conditions for the growth and competitiveness of the Lavazza Group. The Innovation Center, which opened in 2010 after a major renovation of the management building at the historic Turin manufacturing plant, is the headquarters for all of the company’s Research and Development activities, and acts as a symbol of its industrial evolution. It spans over 4,000 square metres of workshops, classrooms and offices, and represents a workspace for over 130 people.

The R&D strategy is based on four pillars: sustainability, innovation, a focus on quality, and competitiveness on the market. These are the guiding principles behind product development, from the coffee itself to the packaging, and even the design and the engineering of the coffee machines. Work is carried out with a focus on both the medium-short term and long-term plans, in accordance with criteria for continuous improvement and exceptional innovation. An extremely dynamic activity, which entails the acquisition of numerous new patents and design patents every year.

 

Of the 170 patent families obtained since the company’s establishment, almost half date from the last 10 years, further proof of the continual investments made in research and development. These patents focus mainly on innovations in coffee machines, aimed at improving their efficiency and sustainability or allowing hot and cold beverages to be dispensed together. They also include many design patents which, in addition to improving the functionality and efficiency of coffee machines, have won prestigious international awards for the company.

 

A focus on Quality is a crucial element common to all activities, forming an intrinsic part of all stages of brand and product development — from the green coffee to the packaging of the blend, and from coffee machine design to final production — as a way to guarantee top quality at the right price. To this end, the Lavazza Group enacts a strict, centralised policy focusing on preventive checks along the entire supply chain, including external suppliers: over 100,000 checks are performed on the coffee, and over 1.5 million throughout the various stages of coffee machine development. To ensure continuous improvement in the area of Sustainability, the Group has become a partner of EcoVadis, an internationally recognised ratings provider for supplier performances with regards to respecting the environment, human rights, labour rights, ethics and sustainable procurement: issues that the Group has always prioritised.

Training Center

The Lavazza Training Center — established in Turin in 1989, now active with 55 locations worldwide — sees coffee as an element of culture and the subject of constant studies, and it's the world’s largest international training network in the field.

 

Its two main pillars are the Coffee School, which provides professional training on coffee and coffee preparation systems; and the Coffee Design, which focuses on researching and developing recipes and tools to offer a unique coffee experience. Training is provided through programmes developed specially to suit participants’ level of expertise, from baristas to the sales force and from distributors to everyday coffee lovers.

The Lavazza Training Center boasts prestigious collaborations that have developed over the years, such as those it enjoys with the Politecnico di Torino, an international centre of excellence in its field; the Università di Scienze of Pollenzo, established and promoted by the international SlowFood association; and renowned Catalan chef Ferran Adrià’s El Bulli Foundation.  And it was the twenty-year collaboration with the latter (described by Le Monde as “the alchemist revolutionising the culinary arts” and by The New York Times as “the creator of a New Nouvelle Cuisine”) that led to the èspesso, the first solid coffee in history, as well as a range of other coffee design products that have transformed the way we enjoy this drink.

 

Since 2018, the Training Center has also been a Premier Training Campus for the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association); a qualification that means it is now authorised to provide all the training courses from the most distinguished and prestigious international Association in the world of coffee.

Factory 1895

Factory 1895 is a unique production site, where expertise in the art of processing coffee, acquired through over 120 years of history, is put to use in creating the finest blends, while at the same time letting the public in on the secrets behind the creation of a finely crafted espresso: the skilled manoeuvres, the most modern machinery, the most sustainable procedures, all to transform the green beans into a steaming cup of coffee. This innovative platform not only produces prestigious coffees in limited editions, for selected partners and truly premium home consumption, it also pursues the goal of telling the story behind the world of fine coffee, engaging visitors on an immersive journey through all the stages the beans go through as they are processed, from tropical forests to our own kitchen tables.

 

The site, in Settimo Torinese, is the beating heart of the 1895 Coffee Designers by Lavazza. It acts as an experiential hub to promote coffee culture: inside, it’s possible to get an up-close view of the machinery at work — from roasting machines to optical sorters — as well as learning more about the processes and backdrops of the entire supply chain, through digital content and multisensory stimuli. The experience culminates in the Coffee Cave, a tasting area where visitors can savour the distinctive aromatic notes of 1895 coffee.
